Trendline Project. Collection of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for road safety

Trendline is scientific project co-founded by European Union to provide performance indicators in the field of road safety (Collection of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Trendline builds on the experience gained in the Baseline project.

Road Traffic Safety Centre at Motor Transport Institute as a Polish representative in Baseline and now in Trendline is collecting five of eight basic KPIs related to the following areas:

  • KPI 1 Speed: Percentage of vehicles travelling within the speed limit
  • KPI 2 Safety belt: Percentage of vehicle occupants using the safety belt or child restraint system correctly
  • KPI 3 Protective equipment: Percentage of riders of powered two wheelers and bicycles wearing a protective helmet
  • KPI 4 Alcohol: Percentage of drivers driving within the legal limit for blood alcohol content (BAC)
  • KPI 5 Distraction: Percentage of drivers NOT using a handheld mobile device.

Among ten new experimental and complementary indicators defined within the Trendline project four of them are collecting in Poland by Motor Transport Institute in following areas:

  • KPI EXP 5: Helmet wearing of Power Mobility Devices’ riders (E-scooter, E-bikes, Motorised Personal Micromobility Device)
  • KPI EXP 8: Use of lights by cyclists in the dark
  • KPI Exp 9: Enforcement of traffic regulations
  • KPI EXP 10: Alternative speeding indicators.

The aim of the Trendline project is to update the methodology tested during Baseline to define basic KPI indicators, develop a methodology for ten experimental indicators and testing these out on a limited scale.

Standardization of the data collection process and monitor the effectiveness of actions taken to improve safety throughout Europe is the purpose of the Trendline.
